Skypenames2.exe – Virus or Legitimate Program?

Yesterday Skype notified me of an upgraded version and I duly upgraded to version   But then after the new version was installed I noticed a message flashiing saying ‘Skypenames2.exe wants to use Skype'. No explaination just the option to ‘allow access' or ‘deny access'.

Now being always suspicious of anything wanting to live on my PC I wonder if this is malware or a virus trying to sneek into my world.

After a bit of searching around online I found that Skypenames2.exe is in fact a legitimate programme from Skype.

According to their technical Support team Skypenames.exe highlights the telephone numbers within your web browser enabling one click calling through Skype. They say that it is completely safe to allow access to Skypenames2.exe. However if you don't want it just click ‘deny access'.

If you did allow access and then change your mind just disable it.
To disable number highlighting (Skypenames2.exe) follow these steps:
1. Open your web browser.
2. On the toolbar you should see the Skype Add-on/extension icon.
3. Click on the icon to turn it off.

Good blog. I got a lot of great information. I’ve been keeping an eye on this technology for awhile. It’s interesting how it keeps varying, yet some of the core components remain the same.

Thanks for this useful tip, concise article. I have allowed access now. I think it should stop popping up to ask me in future now that I’ve allowed it once.
